Looking for a monster

I recall reading somewhere about a monster (not a doppleganger or changeling) that takes a harmless-looking form (like a small animal or a child) to attract a potential victim in order to lure them close.

I think it might have been a form of fay or undead, but can't remember where I read it, or even if I'm remembering correctly.

Ring any bells for anyone?

Well, that could be a lot of things.

Succubi have an "Alter Self" ability, that in the 3.0 rules could be used to an effect similar to that.

I don't think it was the Succubus. That said, Succubi have polymorpth in 3.5... This has possibilities

I don't know. That's the problem. If I knew the source, I'd look it up.

I just have a vague memory of a monster like that and it would fit sooo nicely in something I'm planning. Is not too critically important though.

There's teh Grimalkin from MM 2. It isn't Fey or Undead, it's a shapechanger that typically appears as a housecat. That's the only one that comes to mind that may be what you're referring to.

It's from Libris Mortis. Which is a bit less over the top than BoVD, but I see your point.
