Looking for a new ruleset for my group

Drabix

First Post
Most of my group grew up on 3.x. I've been DMing 4e with them since it came out. I enjoy the quicker prep of 4e, several of them enjoy character creation in 3.5/Pathfinder more. I'm looking for options to span that gap. Fantasy Craft sounds like it might be what I'm looking for, but I might be missing something. Any suggestions?

I'm a HEROphile, and I know from past experience that I can make fantasy PCs resembling any edition D&D coexist in the same campaign. I would imagine that you could do likewise with any of the major "toolbox systems" like M&M or GURPS or what have you.

IME, such systems tend to take a lot of prep in PC design, but once that hurdle is passed, you almost never need the books again until you need to change something on the sheet.

This is probably totally insane but... what about running 4e with 3e/PF characters?

I was lookin over the numbers for a level 11 PF ranger and a level 11 4e hunter ranger and they're fairly similar, with on average the same HP, similar defenses (if 3e defenses are calculated passively), similar attack values, etc. I was really surprised by that.

I know I ripped off a few DM concepts from 4e for my Pathfinder games. I never need the whole stat-block or spell lists for monsters from the Bestiary. Heck, I've considered ripping off 5e's "roll using core stat" over regular skill checks.

My group has recently switched to assorted FATE 3.0 systems (Spirit of the Century, Dresden Files, Starblazer Adventures...), and we're having a lot of fun with it.
