Looking for a simple system

At the risk of starting an edition war...I'm going to say 1st edition D&D.

It's simpler (some concepts aren't as fluid, but all in all it's simpler).

It's grittier (there is always that sense of fighting to survive, but usually without feeling helpless).

It's a lot of fun...

I know you said you're burned out on d20, but what about Mutant and Masterminds? It streamlines a lot of the d20 stuff (it is OGL). Sure it was made for supers, but it is easily flexible enough to do fantasy with only a few tweaks. I think it would work. It' s not too simple and as I said, they have streamlined a lot of the D&D rules. You only get one attack a round. There are no hit points, attacks of opportunity, or rolling for damage. Although, they were nice enough to give you some sidebars explaining how to put some of that stuff back in. Try it out!

Hey, I didn't know the older versions of D&D were options! ;)

My vote would be for the "Moldvay" edition, with just the Basic and Expert rulebooks. Everything you need to run a campaign in only a a 128 pages or so--and you can keep them in a three ring binder.

Well, I went through a bunch of the games I own and looked at several of the suggestions here on this thread.

The result?

I ordered Savage Worlds. I looked over the testdrive pdf and read through the website. It seems to have the balance of detail and ease of play I'm after. Characters can advance and be individualized but the availibility and rules of various powers & abilities is managable.

Hopefully, I'll have the full rulebook by the end of the week. Thanks for all the advice. :)

I think you're going to be really happy with it. I got my copy a few weeks ago, and I have done several battles with it, as well as converting one old CoC adventure and playing it. Simply put, SW is an incredible system!

I would say either Decipher's Lord of the Rings...

Or Atlas Games Ars Magica, which you can down;pad for free at RPGnow. Can't get much cheaper than that....
