The fundamental idea the games revolve around in combat is that Conduits can only regain their energy at specific locations and the energy that can be restored at those locations vary. Because of that encounters are on large spaces with multiple levels with alot of enemies. So it forces you to prioritize mobility and precision to be able to conserve energy and get to energy nodes quickly. Which makes sense to use many enemies in one combat.
