You could also use a hound archon or a sword archon instead. Of course all of this is an ECL over 14. That's way too high for 8th level characters even if they are gestalt. I would probably use two 5th level human paladins, two 5th level human rangers with humans as favored enemy and the archery combat style with point blank and precise shot. Add a sword archon and an 8th level human half-celestial sorcerer. Round it out with 6 3rd level human fighters with heavy crossbows. That should be a good encounter without being overwhelming.
