Looking for alternate ways to generate random ability scores

Specifically, there were two posts I saw on these forums at various times over the past several months . . . unfortunately, I failed to save them. If you have a link to the thread of either of these generation methods, please link it! Or, if you have any random ability score generation methods other than the ones I'm going to describe, I'd love to see those as well!

1) Playing cards. Create a 'deck' of cards consisting of the 4-9 of each two suits. Shuffle them up and draw them two at a time. Add up each pair to get a total of six ability scores. They will range from 8 to 18, and all ability score sets generated through this method will add up to the same value. As you can see, I remember much of how this method works, but there were details the OP included that I can't recall.

2) Additive rolling. Start with five 10s and an 8. Roll a d6 to determine an ability score, then add +2 to that score. Repeat X number of times. As you can see, my memory of this system is nowhere near comprehensive.

Thanks for any help, and I promise to save them this time so I don't have to create another thread like this a couple months from now :)

Really, no one remembers anything about these? Or has them saved on their computer? Or has the link? Or has any other random ability score generation methods? :)

One googles home page there is a small advanced search link to the right of the text box. You can specify which site to look for and some other nice details.

Or... you could support EnWorld and get the internal Search function :)

Regarding random ability scores, one of my favorites before I became a fan of the point buy system is great for generating characters that you have a general idea of what you want to play, but are willing to risk playing something else.

Basically you get a dice pool of 25 dice. You assign a number of dice to each stat, then roll and take the best three for that stat.

This way you can 'guide' where the character may end up by placing 6 or even 8 dice on Strength... planning to be a major barbaric thug, and end up rolling a bunch of 3s....

I had fun with the system and enjoyed building the characters off of the stats I ended up with.

Thanks, I didn't see that, even when I looked for it after I was looking.

I've always wanted to, but a support account for any reasonable amount of time is way more expensive than most of the RPG stuff I would buy in that amount of time combined. I try to support instead by making all my RPGNow purchases through the ENWorld affiliate store.

Interesting! I'll save that method as well :)
