It sounds more like a title than a role or archetype.

What, you mean like "barbarian" or "knight" or "scout"? Assassin was an established fantasy archetype before D&D came along.

Aside: a similar point about class names can be made for the line that it is just a job: An assassin is just someone who assassinates people. Well a fighter is just someone who fights, a scout is just someone who scouts etc.

BTW, I agree about casters being formidable in the job of knocking a target off. But then casters are the best at pertty much everything

I would recommend the assassin base class from the d20 Freeport Companion by Green Ronin. It should fit the bill nicely.

And if you can't find the older d20 version then you can get the 3rd Era PDF version from RPGNow.
