Looking for an attack spell that's built to last

Scorching Ray gives you multiple shots, but you've got to use 'em all at once. Flaming Sphere hangs around and can be retargetted, but the damage isn't incredible.

The Summon Monster spells all have legs...at least after the very low levels.
I also miss Melf's Minute Meteors.
Terrain alteration spells also have decent legs: look at Web, Grease, and Everards Black Tentacles.
Summon Swarm can last for a while.
That's all I can think of for "core" spells, but it sticks in my head that Monte Cook has some in the Eldritch Might series.

Thanks, guys. I was looking for a basic zap spell, but I don't think that's gonna fly. In the end wands are probably the answer.
 

The hardest art to master is knowing when to cast no spell at all. Once you have that down, the wizard is the most potent PC in the party.
