Looking for Dragon Hunting Party

The aranea is LA+4 and she only has three levels of monstrous humanoid. I might be wrong but I think she needs another level.
... to be CR 5? How do you figure?

@ Nifft: How did you determine stats and levels for the Aranea... using Savage Species, or did you reverse-engineer her stats from the core monster? I am looking to add an Aranea/Sorcerer 4 to my current campaign, and I'm curious as to how you did the math. I hate math, myself, but the fact that she's a shapeshifter (and constantly assumes a monotonal female Grey Elf form) is driving my player insane, which I LIKE. ;)

No "reverse engineering". It's right out of the SRD. All I did was add the Elite Array and one level of Sorcerer... and change the feats.

Note that it's an NPC, so its Level Adjustment is ignored, and only its CR counts.

You could play the aranea that I posted, but it'd have LA +4 over its four HD, instead of CR +1. Not quite as good a deal. In fact, pretty terrible. :\

Heh, that's no problem because she IS an NPC. ;) So, I just tack on the 4 levels onto her monster HD (like a regular multi-class type deal) and all things are fine and dandy.

My question is this, however... if your Aranea is a multi-classed monster and she only has 1 level of Sorcerer, how does she get access to 2nd level spells? Wouldn't she need to be a 4th level Sorcerer (and an 8th level NPC) before she gets access to 2nd level slots?

[Edit: NM... IRTFSRD; A spellcasting class is an associated class for a creature that already has the ability to cast spells as a character of the class in question, since the monster’s levels in the spellcasting class stack with its innate spellcasting ability.] :o

Err, no? Go read the Aranea monster entry. They cast as Sorcerers out of the box.

LOL Check out my edit in the above post. I was seeing the Sorcerer spells as spell-like abilities when in fact, they are spells. And, acc'd to the SRD, they stack, so haha on me. That's good, though... makes my life a LOT easier.

*dusts off the week-old thread*

Post-battle report:

Dragons won without losses. Yay!

Dragon hunters lost, two dead. Survivors cut a deal to keep their equipment and walk off with the bodies - they're planting a "bad lead" report at the local bounty office.

The battle itself:
Suzy blinded the gold before getting Paralized, and a few rounds later, killed by CdG (she survived the first CdG...).

Gold retreated into the hole int he dome (despite still being a fairly good combatant despite the blindness) in a bit of a panic.

Archer did very well with the six +1 Bane arrows - dealt about 80 damage over three rounds. 40 to the blind, flying gold, then switched over to the active silver when he noted the CdG attempts, and that everyone else was focusing on the one they could reach.

Mad Martin did some nasty, nasty damage after Lucy got into a flanking position to help out on the silver. He did a pretty fair amount before that, too (I went ahead with the +1 Bane Greatsword), but failed a Fort save vs. Paralizing breath, and got CdG'd.

After Rick ran out of the good arrows, Suzy and Martin were killed, Rick and Lucy saw they couldn't win (and, due to the nature of the terrain, running was a bad idea), they surrendered. They got out with their lives, their friends' bodies, and all their equipment. Now they just have to tell the bounty office that the cave they though had the dragons had some other nasty critter.

Went much better than I expected - I thought at least one player would be rolling up a new character....

Thanks for the help; if they start terrorizing the populace again, they'll be more rangers - Rick did very, very well for not getting scratched.

I'm impressed with your players! That, or with paralyzing breath. :)

Next group should have a Necromancer or Psion (shaper) or something else immune to paralysis.

Cheers, -- N
