Looking for Location Ideas

First Post
I'm fleshing out a portion of my world that's mostly hilly wilderness on the edge of a large empire. I'm trying to put interesting locations out there for the players to visit, but I'm mostly drawing a blank. Does anyone have any interesting ideas I could "borrow" or perhaps direct me to a site with some ideas to get the old creative juices flowing.

Thanks,

Some random ideas:

A valley where the acoustics cause echoes to deafen loud noisemakers.
A deep, deep dark canyon full of rare and wondrous spiders (ala the movie Arachnophobia).
Ruins of a keep and towers - some ruined segments of which levitate.
A "goldrush" town of dwarves who have struck shallow buried mithril ore - has an old west feel.
A stationary, permanent cyclone on the site of an ancient temple to the elements.

Hmmmmzmmmzzzz....

As it is the edge of a large empire. Border fortresses along a river. all in view of the next along the way. Try finding pictures of the rhine near the lorelei and the swartswald ( germany) very hilly rough terrain. the rhine even has a series of castles.

Thanks for the ideas.

I'm going to put in border fortresses, though the rivers run the wrong way. The province is something like Egypt in that there is a large central river running out of the hills and mountains and those hills are the border rather than the river.

I also like the cyclone idea and will probably include that.

Thanks,

Hunting Lodge - a nobles play ground, gather up the family and head for the hills. The rich go to the country! Wagner's Kane book idea, throw in a werwolf!

Lumberjack work camp - I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay!

Trapper gathering - Vendors setup a camp and the trappers come in from the wilds to trade furs for goods and have a big party for a two week period.

Burial ground - see it in the movies, barbarians chasing those that came on it and touched something.

Mushroom forest

Gaint termite mounds or ant hills

Yellowstone, the bat cave, slippery rock, or any other sign from the road. These could be natural wonders, hot springs, lookout points, old trees, ponds of clear water, you name it. Just do a search of mountian trails, or national parks.

look into the great serpent mound in southern ohio, lotsa cool mystery and intrigue should pop into your head over that one...

gnomes who keep watch on the lands around by flying up on kites(the chinese did this)

A small grotto, cave, garden, whatnot, which is a secret Shrine to a god. FR does this, alot. For instance, in a city, I had hidden a shrine to Sune. Basicly a garden that no one but the Sune worshipers knew about, that one of them lead the party to, to hide in. It was in a big gap in the city's wall, maintained by a cleric to Sune.

Rounser,

That is some priceless stuff. Where do you get the ideas? Mine come from pictures and random association.

Aaron.

floating ice islands, that are a combination of pre-, and post- apocolyptic where time runs backwards and dinosaurs rule with the drow that now live on the surface...
