Looking for PC Game recommendations

gfunk

First Post
I was hoping some of you folks could recommend a PC game to me. I am looking for anything that has good long-term single-player value. I'm not into multiplayer so I don't care about online stuff.

Here are some games I've recently purchased (and completed):
Freedom Force
Icewind Dale II
Mechwarrior 4:Mercs
Hitman 2
Grand Theft Auto 3
Warcraft III

I'm really looking for a game with a good single player mode. Genres don't matter much to me, I play games based on their individual merits.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Civilization III has good long-term single player value. Just be careful; once you start playing, you won't be able to stop.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell has an awesome single-player mode, but it's a tad on the short side. You can win it in 10-15 hours of gameplay, and after that there isn't much else left to do.

Ach, yuck...don't get System Shock 2. While it was an OK game, you'd do better to get the first one...the original was an incredible game with a gripping storyline. The graphics aren't great compared to today's standards though. But you could probably find a copy on ebay for $10 or less.

As far as semi-"classic" games, I'd recommend Starcraft, Deus Ex (one of the finest games I've ever played), Planescape. Neverwinter Nights was also a lot of fun.

I second the nomination of System Shock 2 (I liked it a lot!) and Planescape Torment.

Also if you liked GTA3, Vice City is about to come out on the PC in a few days. Another GTA3 like game is Mafia, another excellent single player game.

While many have expressed dislike for the included SP campaign in Neverwinter Nights, there are thousands of user-made modules available for download at Neverwinter Vault, some of which are very highly rated by the fan community. I've played a few conversions of PnP modules that were pretty well done.

The best part of that game is that there is effectively an unlimited supply of good content.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys. Some comments:

1. CivIII - I orginially bought this game when it came out and became obsessed with it. However, as I learned more about the strategies of your computer opponents I was rather peeved to learn that the computer 'cheats' at Prince level and higher. So I returned it . . . However, I just subscribed to Yahoo's games on demand service and I'm getting into it again.

2. SystemShock2/Planescape:Torment - I have heard very good things about these games, but does anyone know if they will easily run on WinXP?

3. Deus Ex - Got it yesterday from Yahoo's games on demand, thanks.

4. Starcraft and BW expansion - played it and re-played it countless times. Easily the best RTS I've ever played.

5. GTA/Mafia - I really got into GTA when I first got it, but I've kind of gotten a little sick of it

6. Splinter Cell - downloaded demo and I must say it is very cool -- I love playing games in the Thief/Hitman mold. However, much too short for me.

<added> 7. NWN - I have this game and have played through it multiple times. It was very fun while it lasted but a bit too much like Diablo for my taste (point and kill).
Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming!

I shall recommend Rayman 3, and 2 if you haven't played it already. They're both good platform games, so it's best if you have a good gamepad.

I haven't had a chance to extensivielyt play any of them myself, but I'll suggest you look into Divine Divinity, Arx Fatalis, and Morrowind. I've read good things about all of them (some more than others).

Thought I should mention the Serious Sam games (First and Second Encounter), good old school FPS fun. May be best consumed in small servings.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind has a pretty involved single player campaign. Lots of people seem to adore this game, but I just couldn't get into it. It may be worth a look however.

The Baldur's Gate Saga (Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2: The Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal) are all great single player games. BG2 far surpasses the first one in shear fun.

Neverwinter Knights because of the modules you can download.

Freelancer - after the SP story it mostly becomes a space flight combat sim but a lot of fun.

Diablo 2 - hack and slash bady! Have yet to put this away.
