probably much MUCH shorter than what you need it for, but there is also ...

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9yU3exZ9LI]YouTube - Le tourbillon noir[/ame]

(it has a slow intro but kicks up after a few seconds)

It's from the Pirates of Dark Water cartoon. The US version had a voice over, The above link goes to the french intro that did not have a voice over and just used the music.

Inarguably the greatest song ever written on the subject.

Some fun ones

EDIT: Sorry - buggered up the embedding and now don't seem to be able to do so when editing post :( Anyay, do check these songs out. EDIT 2: Ok - now it worked - appears you don't need all that embedding code - just past the weblink...didn't know that ;)

Can't believe no one has mentioned Weird Beard by The Mad Caddies (who are coming to Australia in March and I am going to see them :)

"Weird Beard"

Was, also going to mention Alestorm, but beaten to that one. Great recommendation.

Also, check out Flogging Molly. They have several. I love "Tobacco Island", but these two might be more what you are looking for ;) (A bit of fun).

"Salty Dog"

Had a listen to some of these - great thread :)

Not sure that Emerson, Palmer and Lake (long) song is the best one ;) Maybe written, but it sure doesn't 'sound' piratey. Quite the opposite if you ask me - very 'gentile'... Could be the good, pampered nobles talking about pirates?:confused:

Robert Shaw arranged and conducted a number of sea shanties for his men's chorale. The arrangements aren't exactly the gritty and drunken style people normally think of when they think of shanties, but the recordings are simply phenomenal. You can get the album here: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Sea-Shanties-Robert-Shaw/dp/B00000JPC1]Amazon.com: Sea Shanties: Robert Shaw: Music[/ame]

One example from it is here:

If you don't mind show-tunes, the opening song from Muppet Treasure Island is pretty good:

If you're looking for a slightly more modern twist on such song, Great Big Sea has made quite a career out of modernizing (to greater or lesser extents) sea shanties and other assorted nautical songs from Newfoundland.

Multiple songs of theirs are available on YouTube. Especially look into:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0SpwEdU5ak]The Night Patty Murphy Died[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXPzMXN3hAg]The Mermaid[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD0XihILQzk]The Old Black Rum[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOw3w-00Jqw]Lukey's Boat[/ame]

to start. No sound at the moment on this computer, so they might not be the best recordings of each song, but they should be pretty good, at worst. :)

You can't go wrong with Running Wild.

if heavier stuff is ok, there is also alestorm:

That sounds like it could be good stuff, and metal is one of the sounds of D&D. Only thing is with stuff that's got lyrics, you have to make sure both the lyrics and music fit the right mood. Instrumental is easier to use, but good lyrics can pump the players.

Almost anything by the Chieftains works... They did the soundtrack for the 1990 version of Treasure Island, starring Christian Bale and Charlton Heston. You can find most of the tracks on YouTube:

THIS.

That movie is one of my biggest pirate inspirations. Really Treasure Island is one of the most important pirate trope codifiers of all time, and that was a pretty good film adaptation. And when I didn't have "He's a Pirate" going through my head while I was planning the campaign, I had this instead:

I agree. The lyrics are pretty good but the music is waaay to soft for pirates.

'When the Boat Comes In' (a.k.a Dance To Your Daddy) is more of a fishing song, but the mood is right:
