Looking for rules light

I'll throw out another vote for Castles and Crusades. Not only is character creation a breeze, it's got tons of support on the internet, including skill and multi-classing/dual-classing rules on the Troll Lords site. Oh yeah, combat is quick and DM prep is easy and fast.

Don't know when you plan on starting your campaign, but after June 23rd(Free RPG Day) the Troll Lords will be re-posting their quickstart rules, and I have to say they're pretty good as a mini-PHB for new players. It's a "limited"(in class and race options) version of the rules that takes characters all the way to 4th level & comes with a free adventure.

I'd second (or third, or whatever) Castles & Crusades. Its a good system, and if you want additional depth it easily allows you to add in whatever else you want w/out straining the system. (I'm adding in a version of Hindrances and Background Advantages, for example.)

You might also check out Savage Worlds. Its a total departure from the d20 paradigm, but it is a great system - very simple, very elegant, loads of fun (and has a slew of unconventional settings).

One of my favorite parts of C&C is how you can add in any number of subsystems. If you want non-weapon proficiencies, skills and feats, Castle Zagyg's secondary skills, prestige classes, etc. etc. Minimal conversion is needed.
