It can avoid unintentional metagaming and be a source of inspiration.
Your players might have gotten used to your specific style and twists you use.
Using an outside villain will keep them on their toes.

Those taking on the role of villain can enjoy setting plans in motion, commanding underlings and trying to eliminate the bothersome player characters that oppose them.
Even when things start to go south you have to make the best of the situation and try to turn things around with the means at your disposal.
