Looking to brainstorm "better" plots

To add to my own thread, I've always liked the concept behind the TV series Ghost Whisperer. As you'd expect from the title, life revolves around a woman who can 'see dead people' and help them find peace by helping them complete a final task. Not every ghost is friendly, of course, and some aren't even exactly clear on what it is they want. I would love to run a game like this.

As an added bonus, have one of the PCs actually BE a ghost. This works amazingly well in a d20 Modern setting and, for the right player, dealing with the benefits and complications of being constantly insubstantial is a campaign in and of itself.

I'm well familiar with the Dresden Files and a whole lot more of "Modern Fantasy" titles. I've previously run a d20 Modern campaign where the players would often "slide" from Modern to Fantasy D&D (largely as a way to save time and work by running pre-gen D&D adventures with d20 Modern characters) - in fact, for a short while, the game featured my then-gf as the aforementioned ghost PC.

Said campaign ended when it was revealed to the players that the reason they kept "sliding" is because their psyches were kept in "the Matrix" which was slowly breaking down... because their starship's AI had decided that life was meaningless and was now on a collision course into the nearest Sun. Yup, they were actually d20 Future characters who had to reconstruct their psyches (by levelling, how 'bout that) to the point where they could be re-installed into their bodies, bodies which were now outfitted with Robotech Cyclone battle armor (standard issue) and primed to take out the rogue AI and its mechanical minions scattered about the ship.

I wish I could somehow reproduce it. It was glorious. *lol*
 


Life and times of the City Watch - Lot of cop shows out there to take plots from, you just have your characters on the beat dealing with random crime. You just have to come up with the crimes but be sure there are bar fights and taverns fires for them to investigate.

I had originally planned to DM a pair of players who wanted to play a couple of toughs... a gunslinging crowman and a beefy minotaur solider. I had a basic area set up and had planned to start their careers as security until they 'made' detective.

It was accidentally dubbed "Tengu & Cash".

... that was back in January. I never did start it up. Might be time to dust off the concept and give it a dry run.

This can get interesting in plots because of jurisdiction; City Watch vs. Guild Law, Church Law and then Nobles. It also can lead to additional side adventures, example: NPC informer telling the players that the murder of X was because he was flashing a map to a local treasure, what will the players do if that map comes into their hands?

One or more party members are mind controlled by an evil Wizard traveling with a freak show of mind controlled creatures. Works very well if the party has a PC with an unusual race. The Wizard is going to hunt down the PC if he escapes his magical bonds.

The PC's must stop an artifact from getting into the hands of an evil Necromancer and defeat him.

One of the PC's buys a piece of jewlery from a fence for a low price, immidiatly gets accused of having taken it from the kings daughter. The PC's have to lie low while they try to find out who killed the kings daughter and make them pay. The kings daughter was sacrified to power a spell that cursed the king with a deadly disease that can't be healed without finding the sacrificers or something like that.

... yeah, been reading som Conan books lately. :D

Regarding your comment about getting tired of Fantasy, I think you could run it in 5e, you would just have to disallow PC spellcasters and run it in Hyboria. Have all the spellcasters be NPC's. Level-wise, level 3+ for seasoned veterans and level 6+ for captains and the sort. Level 1-2 noobs are just that, untrained or unseasoned. Have rulers be of level 9+. It's a dangerous age where might is right to a large degree. You can have a world with mostly humans, where magic is scary, rare and mysterious. Monsters as opponents does happen, but it's not the norm. Usually, you only run into them if you go to the "forbidden" or "haunted" places people stay clear of.

PC has a relative die, leaving them a track of land and implied service to the baron. Problems? Local thieves guild wants protection money, druids want to control the forests, a dark cult has a base in the caves, a hidden monastery for hobgoblin monks, the road through the land is a prime spot for bandits, taxes are due (who has the money?), baron needs a favor, uncle left jealous relatives who want the land (but aren't willing to pay for it), paying for repairs on the castle, hidden tunnels to the underdark, someone's stealing the bodies from the graveyard, the land borders an enemy kingdom/power, a cryptic clue suggests there's a hidden treasure... Endless possibilities...
