Loot question

I've read through the whole treasure parcel thing and have a question....what about the equipment that was on the creatures your PC's just took out and are now looking over the bodies like a pack of vultures?

Example...the party just took out a drow acachnomancer and want to know about the Spider Rod this guy was using to smack the crap out of them during the encounter....

The rod has no stats listed in the PHB as to level/cost etc.

Can they use it?

If not why?

Did I miss something somewhere?

I may be wrong but I think a lot of the "magic items" that monsters are using are foci for their powers or something like that. The items are not the source of the power, the monster is. Monsters can also have regular magic items for the players to loot and use, but their power foci are just accessories, I think.

Just like the goblin hexer has a "hexer rod" or something like that. That only refers to an unenchanted implement. You can buy regular rods, orbs, wands, and staffs in the PHB. You can loot these items, but it's nothing that you couldn't get for a couple of gp, and it won't give you any bonuses on your powers.

In fact, since you can still use powers that have the Implement keyword without an implement, you don't need to have a basic implement until you can get a magic one. Unless you use one of those houserules that reduces the power of any spells you cast without the proper implement.

Wizards still benefit from having an implement matching their particular implement specialisation, even if it is non-magical, as it allows them to use their implement encounter ability.

The only problem with selling arms and armor is that you need the DM's approval to do so, then its at the 1/5 sale price. Otherwise it has no market value.

Pg 220 PHB

A Spider Rod isn't a magic item, so the PC's can't use it. At best, they can find some curious scholar or museum curator who'd want to buy it.
Of course, it would also make a good trophy if the fight held RP significance.
