Considering that Tolkien thought one of the most important aspects of Middle Earth was the poetry and music of its peoples, this seems quite appropriate.
I would be interested in the composers interperetation of some of the songs and poems in the books.

I hate every ape I see
from chimpan-A to chimpan-Z,
no you'll never make
a monkey out of meeeee...

Oh wait, wrong musical. ;)

Oh, my God. I was wrong!
It was middle-earth, all along!
You've finally made a hobbit -
Yes, we've finally made a hobbit
Yes, you've finally made a hobbit
OUT OF MEEEEEEEEEE!

If I were a Witch King,
Daidle deedle daidle
Daidle daidle deedle daidle dum
All day long I'd biddy-biddy-bum
If I were a dead man.
I wouldn't have to breath hard,
Daidle deedle daidle
Daidle daidle deedle daidle dum
If I were a biddy-biddy Witch,
Daidle deedle daidle daidle King.

We worked on that, here, a while ago... :D

Master of the Horse
(with Wormtongue, Gandalf, Theodin, Aragorn, Legalos and Gimli, Son of Gloin)

Welcome, My King
Sit yourself down
Now you must rest
Heavy's the crown.
And for a while,
Think not of steeds,
You get your sleep
I'll do the deeds!

(aside)

Seldom do you see
Honest men like me
A gent of good intent
Who’s content to be
Master of the horse
Doling out the charm
Ready with a whisper
That'll cause some harm.
Tells a little lie
Keep him off his guard
With an instrumental voice I'm a verbal bard
Glad to help the kingdom languish
Helps me out a bit in kind
But no need to thank me
Eowyn will do just fine!
Master of the horse
Trusted to the End!
Glad to be so helpful
To my wizard friend
Used to dress in white
Though his heart is black
Now of many colors
And he won’t look back
Saruman looked in the crystal
The future Middle-Earth is here
Shouldn't have no problems
Stormcrow's the only one I fear...

(Gandalf enters and sings)

Master of the horse?
Give a wiz a break
Get down on your belly
You're a loathesome snake!
Did you even think
I would not return?
I can walk through fire
And I won't get burned!
Now that I'm in White it's easy
Breaking You and Sarry's spell

(Théoden stands and sings)

Oddest thing about it
Suddenly I'm feeling mighty well!

Strap on my armor
Bring me my sword
No more to listen
To venomous words.
Grima you tricked me
But I'll not scorn
Off to your master
Now sound out the horn!

(Gandalf sings again)

Good to see you up
No time left to lose
Saruman is moving
Now you have to choose
You could fight right here
But I've got a plan
Helm's Deep is much better
For both horse and man
Look what else I brought
Aragorn the King
Legalos and Gimli
But, of course, no ring!

(Théoden sings again)

Friends you are all more than welcome
Though the days are dire, true
Glad to have you here
But I doubt our swords will do!

(Gandalf sings again)

I will go ahead
Get nephew and more
If he isn't dead then we'll see you at dawn
Hold out as best you can
Worthy of a song
I'll take Shadowfax and I will not go wrong

(Théoden aside to Aragorn)

I'm sure that when you were a ranger
Far too long you had to roam
Eowyn's compliant
Maybe an alliance

(Aragorn breaks in...)

No, I have an elf back home!

(Aragorn continues)

Master of the horse
Call your army nigh
We won't let a goblin or an orc survive!

( Théoden sings again)

We'll do what we can
Riding to the Deep
Though I long have slumbered
I no longer sleep

(then to Gandalf)

We'll need all the help you muster
Perhaps the trees will polymorph

(Legalos sings)

I'll shoot all my arrows

(Gimli breaks in...)

Just remember never toss a Dwarf!

They all ride off continuing the chorus...

Master of the Horse!...

Although I would have really like to see Gandalf sing, "Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious" just before casting a spell. Or have Galadriel singing, "I'm So Pretty."

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
(As sung by Treebeard with a chorus of Ents)

Haroom diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Haroom diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Saruman's gone crazy and now everybody knows it
Breeding Orcs with Goblin-Men
They really are attrocious!
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Haroom diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Haroom diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Because we were afraid to fight, quite tree-like we became
But now the forest's very burnt, and we've ourselves to blame
We sided not with anyone cause they all did the same
Now Saruman will see our heart has got the biggest flame:
Hroom, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
To Isengard we're marching and we'll show him who's ferocious
Merry/Pippin's stirred us up, they really are precocious
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Haroom diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Haroom diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
We all love the Ent-Wives but we just can't seem to find them
If we had that single ring, we'd in the darkness bind them
I wonder if, like all those elves, they traveled cross the ocean
It's a shame the Ent-Draught's not a magic-come-back potion
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Galadriel
(As sung by Gimli to the tune of Maria from West Side Story in a Disney version of LotR)

Though I'm Sleepy right now I think I heard
All the beautiful sounds of Mid'-Earth in a Happy word
Galadriel
I just met an elf named Galadriel
I'm Grumpy but it's weird
'Out-standing' is my beard
On me
Galadriel
I knelt down and begged for Galadriel
I might be Docked some points
With my nose out of joint
You see?
Galadriel
Ask her nicely she'll give you a hair free
Act Bashful she might even give three
Galadriel
I'm Dopey while saying
Galadriel
Galadriel, Galadriel...
Galadriel
Say it weeping it's almost like crying
Say it Sneezy and there's mucous flying
Galadriel
I'm stubbornly saying
Galadriel
I'll kill if you insult
Galadriel

I must say I'm surprised that it took so long for someone to come along and make the point shilsen did - music is an important part of Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth, so why not a musical? :)

A lavish, "approved/official" three-part musical?

I'd imagine the length of the material, the extensive costumes and effects, as well as securing the rights might have something to do with why no one has attempted it thus far (and also some of the reasons why the movies took so long to come about).

Why not? I have the unabridged audio book where Tolkiens songs are sung. I would rather shoot myself than have to listen to 90+ minutes of music the way Tolkien envisioned it.
