I think the main problem is that many Tolkien fans (as evidenced by some of the threads complaining about Jackson's LotR movies) have a relationship with the books which resembles Gollum's one with the Ring. It makes them a little oblivious to the possibility that there can be other approaches to the books than their own, burns their brains, turns them into twisted bony little creatures and makes them post on messageboards. It's quite sad, really, so all one can do is pity them and shove them into giant volcanoes whenever possible :D

That was beautiful. Never before have I seen such a succinct description of Tolkien purists.
