Los Angeles FLGS

Los Angeles does not have a whole lot of stuff going on downtown, gaming-wise. Your best bet is probably to pop on up to Pasadena (you can even take the metro up there pretty cheaply) and check out The GameZone on Colorado. A really nice store with game rooms, LAN gaming, tournaments, etc. Lots of kids from CalTech and Pasadena City College there.

If you find yourself on the West Side, over in Santa Monica, you can find a really cute and funky store actually on Santa Monica and Yale called Aero Hobbies. I love this place; there aren't really even any bookshelves, a lot of the product you just root through in cardboard boxes on the floor, the way a gaming store should be. I don't think they've got a website. The guy that runs the place is pretty cool, too.

Probably the biggest game store in LA is The Last Grenadier in Burbank on North Hollywood. They aren't always the friendliest people though, so I don't go there.

Aero Hobbies generally has a great selection, if you can find what you're looking for. He tends to have some older stuff that is difficult to find elsewhere, but it will be underneath some stack somewhere in the store.

The Game Zone in Pasadena is probably the easiest to get to from downtown. Don't expect to be treated with any courtesy by the staff though, unless you're fortunate enough to go there while the manager (owner?) is working.

Sounds pretty sweet. Do they have any in-store miniatures gaming going on there also? I'm moving to L.A. in a couple of months, so, y'know, I gotta start figuring out the important things, like game stores. I'm pretty excited about checking out the Games Workshop store as well - are you familiar with it?

And they never seem to be open when I'm over there. Last time I was in Burbank I was going to drop by but the place was closed at 7pm.

Absolutely agreed. I made several posts to this effect on rpg.net. The thread is here but you have to dig for the comments about Game Zone. My comments are on Page 9 of the post.

I never really venture back into that section of the store because, not to be rude, but it's just never been aired out since probably 1976. 'Nuff said.

On the positive side, they do get in quite a lot of stuff. Lots of d20 stuff. It's a little difficult to browse through because they stack the books flat and pile them on top of each other, and guaranteed the book I'm looking for is at the bottom of the pile.

I also run a store in Cerritos, about 15 minutes from downtown LA not counting traffic. We have the entire gaming line from D&D to Warhammer and Boardgames from most companies... not to mention our store is clean... a rarity for L.a. stores. Gaming space is available by schedule, etc.

Feel free to come by:

Game Arena
11312 South St
Cerritos, CA 90703

Hours: M-Sa 10am - 9pm . Su 12pm - 7pm

(If you do get a chance to swing by, feel free to post your thoughts/review on the store/staff here, I would be happy to get your opinion)

There *was* a Last Grenadier in Northridge but, sadly, they closed around two years ago. Seems as though they'd been there forever.

Yeah, I can relate to the "not the nicest people in the world" statement. At the Northridge location that used to be there were always one of two dudes working the register. One guy was super-cool but the other was a total dick-head. He made me feel like I'd committed some crime just by walking through the front friggin' door! And returning defective product (I once picked up a used Viking Campaign Sourcebook sans pages 33-48) was a virtual impossibility.
