I try not to think of them but I think it showed Desmond that he needed to save Charlie to get to that event, if Charlie was not saved, they would have not found the jumper, was Charlie not the one that was talking to get Desmond to turn around, which allowed Desmond to see the pack, and have the group look up.
This particular scene was before the arrow was fired I thought. They stopped because Hurley was going to have a coronary (sp). I do agree, that Charlie needed to be saved though. If Charlie had died the others would have wanted to turn around right then and there, and would not go to the chute.

Okay, now they have a satellite phone, a guy who knows electronics and communications (Sayid), and a source of power (the Others' village). What's the betting they won't put those three together?

Well considering they are still on the beach and it's been, what 3 days since Jack's return, and still no mention of the village. I doubt they will put it together.

Though the writers could surprise us.
