Lost 05/16/07 "Greatest Hits"

Schedule info is a big deal to most people. You can say "always record Smallville," and poof, it does. No entering times and such.

More powerful, of course, is things like "record anything with Tom Selleck in it," which you can only otherwise do by constantly scanning printed listings.

I'm told it's in Canada now. You typically get TiVo at Best Buy or a comparable store.

That's exactly what TiVo does. The subscription is just for schedule info and software upgrades.

Hmmm...interesting...I'll have to take a look..

At the moment, time shifting at least lets me catch most programs I want, *if I'm available to watch, that evening*....but it doesn't help with stuff like BSG, which I entirely missed, because I'm usually doing things on Saturdays other than watching TV.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy that DVD player when it was on for half price...:(

Though I really enjoyed the episode, one thing kept bugging me:

If you want to disable Looking Glass' ability to jam transmissions, why not just cut the power cable lying on the beach?
eh... how? Do the Losties have any hacksaws? And if they did, wouldn't sinking one into a power cable be a good way to fry yourself?

An axe with a wooden handle and using another chunk of wood as a chopping block. They also have dynamite. Or they could rub it on the jagged edge of a plot hole 'til it cut through.

Who do you think dies next?

I don't know why, I'm pretty sure Ben's gonna bite it. Mikhail, too, going by the preview, but will he really?

BTW: I was under the impression that the beach cable wasn't a power cable as much as an anchor cable. So cutting it would have done no good as to actually shutting off the station.

It might also be the means by which the Looking Glass station is supposed to communicate with the island, since it is jamming any signals even someone on the LG station would want to send or receive. It brings up the question, though, as to how Ben has convinced the Others that the LG station is flooded (and that no one is stranded there alive), for surely some of the Others would have wanted to investigate further if Ben had not broken the receiver attached to the island end of the cable, or some such treachery.

There are ways around it though, aren't there? We don't have TiVO in Canada (that I'm aware of...Starchoice and Rogers don't offer it), but my understanding is that there's a purchase price for the equipment, plus a subscription fee...
Hijack:

The TiVo service is available in Canada, but the box is not - you can only buy the hardware in the U.S., but then you can bring it back home to Canada and the service will be fully available to you (and yes, there is indeed a monthly subscription fee).
