Lost 05/16/07 "Greatest Hits"

Libby? She got Michael to shoot her with blanks, faked her death (perhaps with the aid of a medusa spider), crawled her way out of her grave, and then headed to the four-toed statue to awaken the elder god Losthulhu?

Or did you mean Juliet? ;)

Yeah, Juliet. Sorry, I got my "blonds with mysterious backgrounds" crossed.

Anyone else notice that this was the first time that we didn't see Desmond's flashback? He lied to Charlie about what he saw. I'm not sure the truth of it, but he knew he had to get Charlie down there for some reason.
Thats a good theory. What if the reason he is down there is to actually protect him. He is not in that confrontation with the others in the finale. So he is safe from what ever happens.

Untrue. We didn't see any of Des' flashbacks until very recently.

Then why would he offer to take his place at the last moment?

wow light, you're pretty far behind.

Show's like the shield, the office and 24 I can only watch on Tivo (lets just say prerecorded) because i can't stand the commercial interuptions ruining the flow of the show.

Or, I'm a poor graduate student whose income needs to be spent on silly stuff like housing and bills and food and books, which eliminates almost all of my meager income before I even get to luxury items. :)

As an aside, personally (as in, talking about myself), I don't see the point of me getting TiVo when I don't have digital cable, or for that matter normal cable, and my television is at least ten years old, only has one composite jack, and it doesn't even stereo sound.

If I had the money, I would definitely upgrade, but what I'm getting from my school (standard grad pay, pretty much across the country) is only marginally better than minimum wage, and that's if you assume I'm only working forty hours a week, which isn't even close to the case. Heck, even as a post-doc, I still won't get paid much more than I do now.

Also, fast forwarding through commercials via VCR is still pretty disruptive.

However, the second part is exactly my point. This episode, and show in general, runs a lot better without commercials every eight minutes breaking it up.

Desmond has been struggling for some time with wanting to let Charlie die, so that they can all be rescued, and morally not being able to let him die if he can prevent it. That's why he hemmed and hawed about telling him to duck when the arrow was aimed at his throat.

So Desmond could have offered at the last minute to replace Charlie, because he chickened out and wanted to send Charlie to meet the Others and die.

I think that Desmond offered to go instead, then turned his head, fully expecting Charlie to hit him, as he did. To make Charlie feel more like a hero/martyr.

Even though i got digital cable, when i think about it, everything I tape is from regular basic tv.

As a grad student I can definately see the benefits.
1. More time to study. You no longer are tied to a specific night or a specific time. Heck you can miss an entire season of the show and watch it later.

2. You become the sensetive guy. Your significant other can watch whatever they want to on tv, because it doesnt matter, you'll watch your show later, uninterupted.

3. Save on renting movies. Tivo has a cool way of scanning for things you enjoy, like some creature flick on at 3 a.m.. You tape it, and on some boring day or movie night you flip through your tv movies and pick something. I do this all the time with japanese horror movies.

You get all this for just 20 bucks a month, cheaper if you buy ahead of time. Most of the deals even throw in the equipment free. And all you need is a home phone line (which connects once a week to get updated programing).

Voila.

I appreciate the convincing. :) Trust me, you really don't need to convince me - if I had the money, I would definitely buy it, no hesitation.

Like I said, money is tight. Twenty a month doesn't really seem like a lot - until you've got to choose whether or not that twenty dollars is better spent on food or luxury. I don't mean to sound dramatically emo, though even I can see I am being so, a bit. However, that stereotype about grad students scrounging for food and getting all the free stuff they can is completely true. It's unfortunate, but most post-undergrad work, be it med school or law school or PhD, doesn't pay much at all. Maybe if we got paid more, there'd be more incentive to continue education past undergrad.

I don't rent movies (no VCR :p) , and I barely watch TV, because I already spend all my time studying and doing research. I'll go out and watch the occassional movie, but that's pretty much it. I barely watch TV - Lost, Heroes, and Scrubs are pretty much all I watch regularly. I dropped cable because I wasn't using it, and that was money better spent on food. Heck, I don't even post here as much as I used to.

Anyway! Lost!

If Charlie could make it down to the moon pool, he can definitely make it back up. Swimming up is a lot easier than swimming down. Natural buoyancy will propel us upwards, unless we're weighed down (ie, Charlie and the weight belt). There has to be another reason for them being down there aside from being stranded.

That said, I don't doubt they've been there since the sub exploded. Getting someone back down there would be a chore. Furthermore, I don't think the transmission was being jammed until after they found out about the phone.

So, either Juliet is a liar (very likely) or misinformed by Ben (maybe). After all, if they started jamming the signal, per Juliet, then the station couldn't really have been flooded, could it have?

When I go to grad school next year (if I get accepted -- my undergrad grades 15 years ago were uninspired), I'm taking our old TiVo for precisely the time-saving virtues mentioned. I can save up the shows I want to see, watch JUST them when I have time to watch TV, and blast through the commercials.

Initially, most TiVo users binge when they find they can suddenly watch all these shows that you didn't know were on at 3 a.m. or whatever, but IME, I watch a lot less "just because it's on" TV since I always have 5-10 hours of good stuff waiting for me, when I finally have time to watch TV days or weeks after it originally aired. (I caught Lost on Thursday and still haven't seen the season finale of Everybody Hates Chris, for instance.)

I think it requires at least super-basic cable to work, though, so that's $10-$15 (for the government-mandated broadcast and must-carry stations) in addition to the TiVo subscription each month, though. So for someone on a budget it, there is a significant buy-in amount to get started on it, even if you inherit a used unit from someone who upgraded. (My wife and I upgraded to a dual tuner one this TV season.)
