Lost: 3/7/07

Why do they spend so much time with recreation? They act more like they are on vacation than stranded on the island. Its fun seeing Hurley Sawyer go at it, but still they are awful comfortable now.

See, the recreation is the best part, because that's when they can write characters actually interacting pretty well. Hurley/Sawyer was my favorite part of the episode.

Contrast that with Kate/Sayid/Locke, who barely talk to each other at all, and when they do it's a stilted version of it because the characters need to be dumb to serve the story. It seems to me that the mythology ends up precluding the character interaction, and that should not be the case at all. There should be a happy medium in there somewhere, and there isn't.

That said, the triad of Kate, Sayid, and Locke doesn't seem to mesh well. Perhaps this is because these characters don't really interact much. This holds more true when we consider Sayid, who really doesn't interact with anyone, and the people he does have links to end up dying - see Shannon and Ana-Lucia. Similarly, Locke lost Eko and Jack isn't there; Kate doesn't have Jack or Sawyer (or to a lesser extent, Sun). So it's in part a weak pairing. There's potential there, but it's not built up enough to really ring true.

Even so, neither Kate nor Sayid should be dumb enough to discount Locke's lunacy to the point of leaving him alone, especially considering they established in this episode and the last that they both think he's a little off his rocker. You would think Sayid and Kate would at least mention the C4... although Locke has always gone and done his own thing. Another reason not to leave him alone! It was a sloppy portrayal of Kate especially, whose character they've pretty much destroyed over the last two seasons.

Danielle leaving... could go two ways. It may have been a plot contrivence, in which case that was sloppy. What I'm hoping (and hoping we find out soon) is that Danielle knows a lot more than she's letting on, and left for a very specific reason.

I think they should have sent Locke back to the main group to form a posse to come get as much of the beef and livestock as could be gathered.

I recently rewatched season one, and in the episode in which Rousseau captures Sayid he asks her about the cable that heads out into the water and apparently powers her little hideout. Danielle replies to the effect that that station is now controlled by the Others. Later, though, when Sayid asks if Danielle's ever seen the Others she shook her head and said that she'd only heard their voices whispering. If that's the case...how does she know the Others control her power source?

I thought her reaction to the house (this is the kind of thing she avoids to stay alive or something to that effect) was kind of strange--how did she know that her Alex wouldn't be found in that house? Also, she was advocating killing Sayid's captive...seemingly what the Others would want to protect their secrets. Yet she didn't kill Ben straight off when she nabbed him in one of her traps....

I really hope Rousseau's not an Other deep undercover, but I'm seeing a few red flags. Hopefully you're right and she just knows more than she's letting on for whatever reason.

Wow, warning. If you are a minority on lost you have absolutely no chance of staying on the show long , even if you're just a bit character.

I thought that as well initially, but it's really not in character for anyone to do that.

While Kate and Sayid may have wanted him to do that, Locke wouldn't have gone along with it. Locke doesn't listen to anyone but himself, especially when it comes to the faith stuff, so he certainly wouldn't take being sent home from his mission. He's always seeking approval, he always needs to prove that he's right. That's why Boone died, because Boone listened to Locke, but Locke doesn't really listen back. That's probably why he's such a screw-up.

Kate wouldn't have sent him back because Locke is on the same mission she is on - to save Jack. That leaves Sayid, and he's too valuable a resource to let go. You certainly can't sent Danielle either, she's on her mission to get Alex. Kate won't go back herself, so she plows forward, bringing anyone that comes along.

As an aside... the reason I don't like Kate is because she started out very cunning and strong. The writers took her character and basically gutted it. Now she's just stubborn and can't exist outside of Sawyer and Jack. I blame the writers, for not knowing what to do with her, especially after the first season, other than play damsel for Jack and Sawyer in the triangle. It's a travesty, because there aren't really any strong women on the show - Sun is pretty much the only one that fits the bill now. Ana might have to, but the whole dead thing precludes that.

So, Locke and Kate would not have sent anyone back. Why wouldn't Sayid? In short, he's the odd-man out, and he knows it. Kate and Locke are a little off the deep end as far as wanting to storm the Others' camp and get back Jack, a group who has repeatedly kicked their butts both physically and mentally. He could ask them to, but they won't listen. His alternative is to go back himself, but right now I think he's basically playing babysitter, and making sure the Losties don't lose their only trackers.

I rather liked this one... except... it annoys the hell out of me when the castaways don't ask the Others the obvious question.."Hey, who in hell are you guys, how did you get here?" Well, Michael did I guess, but he didn't get much of an answer...

I am starting to think she is too, an exiled even, because of conflicts/issues, she has to live apart from them.

They could have stayed overnight at the farm house and found out all the answers from those manuals, so, they blow them up, teaser!

Oh Locke. I remember when you were cool and not some guy who accidentally blows stuff up with computers.

Hurley's episode last week was the best of the season, and it didn't even involve the main plot. Sigh... now it's back to business as usual. This show is a mere shadow of its Season 1 self.
