If the timeline is somewhat correct season 4 ends december 31 2004 (or early 2005), and the scene with Ben and Jack at the coffin with the man with very short or missing legs takes place aug/sept 2007, I think it´s a safe guess we have quite a lot of episodes ahead of us with the man in the box.

I just watched it this morning and unless I missed something, what alien artifact are you talking about?

The Grumpy Celt is correct - obviously the icy room, miniature obelisks with strange marking, and funky wheel with powers. But also note that I did use hash marks as well as the word "thingy".

Claire doesn't care if the others go back, she just doesn't want Aaron to go back there. That is how I understood it.

Thus the conflicting signals.
