Cult training camp - some group is using it for basic training, why you have traps in a dungeon, this is reflective in the level f creatures being faced. It also allows you to provide players clues to 'other foes'.

Things to find:
...Papers: letters and seals (taxes, customs, houses)
...Troop Movement - Time and movement of broder watches
...Building plans (DC 25 to ID)

Creatures: Mmmmmm, have to think on that.

If you've got MMIII, there are some funky humanoids called harssefs that live on the plains. They're pretty cool, but I don't recall their abilities or CR.

You know- that has possibilities....

Harssafs
I have the book here and they are more dessert like. Still...combine the two ideas.....

What other ideas are out there...?

I've been thinking about a Karnathi bunker from the war, used to hold loot (think Nazi gold). You're looking for something older, so perhaps they set up the bunker in an existing ruin, but then woke up something kind of nasty which killed them all. They could find karnathi skeletons in the bunker area (the only thing "alive") and traces of a large amount of treasure (a couple gold bars), with clues leading into the ruin proper - an isolated relic from the Age of Demons. Then in the ruin, they can discover some kind of demon from Khyber (maybe a necromancer - invis to undead) and his minions...

oh wow- I thought I had printed out all of his outtakes. Thankyou and yes- this fits and has a lot of posssibilities especially since I have had a lot of little run ins with Kyber pits. This could be a neat little twist on the subject.

Its working guys- the gray matter is twisting and working....

There's an adventure in the next issue of Dungeon (#123, coming out in a couple of weeks) that is set in the Talentia Planes and designed for 6th level characters.

Crypt of Crimson Stars
By Andy Collins and James Wyatt

Rumors of an Eberron dragonshard of enormous size and power have reached the ears of Tophran Damilek, one of Sharn’s wealthiest citizens. Unfortunately, the shard seems to be concealed within a trap-laden temple-tomb, a tomb itself located below a village of cruel halfling nomads and their dinosaur pets. An Eberron adventure for 6th-level characters.

A sorceror devouted to the Demogorgon and his cult followers are investigating the ruins of an old city, namely the ruins of the mages guild. The city is filled with undead from "the great disaster", as well as some common underground monsters that have learned to avoid or destroy the undead (Ropers, Purple Worms, Bugbear clan, etc). A good idea would be to have a clan of goblins or some other low HD creatures that had some skirmishes with the cult, and ask the PCs to help them drive out the intruders. The mages guild itself is filled with magic traps and still holds some barred creatures (outsider types that don't require food/ air) that were released upon said great disaster. Oh yeah, don't forget the treasure.

Depending on your party's sense of morals, the shulassakar (basically yuan-ti, but with bright couatl plumage over the scales) would make an interesting encounter, especially if they've been conned by a <insert evil organization here> member into believing it's filled with treasure from the Age of Dragons. (and maybe there's some of that too)

They could be guarding an ancient couatl ruin with a seal imprisioning a particularly nasty fiend. The shulassakar being the proud, arrogant servants of ultimate Good that they are, would probably use their detect thoughts ability, identify the party as plunderers, and attack them on sight.

From there, it's a simple matter to get the party to unlock the "treasure vault" and free Senor Fiend.
