LotR RPG? Anyone getting this?

I will definately pick it up. I've been looking forward to it for a long time. I even own MERP 2nd edition, even though I hated that system, didn't like the art, and generally get nothing whatsoever except some perverse satisfaction out of owning it.

However, I doubt I'll ever play it. In fact, I'm running some LOTR right now, but in d20. Check out the link in my sig file for more info (shameless plug for my story hour...)

I think I'll eventually get this. I'm also disapointed there won't be any use of the Silmarillion though. I love the LotR though and I'd like to see how they handle the game.

You bet your sweet patooty! I have been waiting for this for a long time. Its will be mines precious!

On the designers: no need to say anything more. Steve Long is one of the best.

On the Decipher boards: First, I would like to thank Ranger REG, who eligantly presented me an out of a conversation that was spiraling downward quickly. For some stupid reason, I foolishly was finding it hard to let the go, but not because of them bashing WOTC and such, cause I see that everywhere and ignore it, usually, but because of the attitude of those two guys being "gaming elitists" and the rest of us are nothing.

The Trek RPG guys do have a domain name registered like lotrrpg.net but it currently points to the Star Trek boards. I am sure pretty soon they will have it up.

The Dec-boardss are very old and seriously need upgrading.

I've been looking forward to this since it was announced. Steve Long is the man and I have total faith in the quality of the product. And from what I have read of the Star Trek RPG, the CODA system seems to be a perfect blend of everything I like about class/level based and point based systems without anything I don't like.

The only thing I worry about is the kind of web support it will get from Decipher. This isn't a huge issue, just a concern.

* modestly * Uh ... you're welcome.

Webmaster Don Mappin is really set to go with a new fan web site for LOTR using the Coda System. Decipher just need to say the word.

Played MERP but I was young at the time and was fascinated by the critical hit chart. Nowadays, I find cross-referencing the weapon spreadsheet (at least with MERP they go by weapon type -- slashing, bludgeoning, etc. -- RoleMaster have spreadsheets for each weapon) to see if I score any damage and critical ... a chore.

I like the arts, especially by Brothers Hildebrandt. They gives me the idealistic visual representation of Middle-Earth and it set the atmosphere of the game as well.

You could give it a shot, and send feedback.

If not, at least the book may serve as a handy reference source.

I will definately take a look at it, although I do not think I will play it. I just converted my campaign to 3e and it has been slow going trying to learn the new rules. I dont think my campaign would survive another total rules conversion. Is the LOTR boxed set that is now out just a quickstart for the new rpg?

J.D. what are you doing posting here? You should be writting the next installment for your story hour!! :)

Decado

It will be a singular hardcover core rulebook.

The boxed set you mentioned is an intro, like D&D Adventure Game boxed set. Of course, the difference between the two, besides the rules, is the price.

I hate to say this, but I'd rather forego the boxed set and get the rulebook.

I didn't think I had any use for a D&D Adventure Game, but for less than $10, I thought I should pick one up. What a wonderful introduction to the game! Full-color pre-generated character sheets, a full-size, full-color dungeon map, beautiful counters, slim, easy-to-read rules, a collection of simple scenarios with rules-reminders where you'll need 'em, etc.

When I heard that there was going to be a similar Lord of the Rings boxed set, I planned on picking it up. OK, a $10 price tag is too much to ask for, but $30? Yeesh! I passed it up too -- as a Tolkien fan who plays RPGs and has disposable income. Who is buying it?
