The Two Towers was just announced as a nominee for Best Picture of 2002 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. These are the folks that sponsor the Golden Globes.

Peter Jackson was also nominated for best director.

Here is the CNN article about the nominations.

I'm happy for PJ, but I honestly think that this film does not deserve to win this year. As I said in another thread, this movie is great, but not really award-worthy, at least in non-technical catagories. If TTT gets nominated for a best pic oscar, it will be a token ackowledgement, nothing more.

FotR was fantastic cinema, and deserved Best Picture. TTT is a great fantasy adventure, but I wouldn't vote for it if I was a member of the Academy. But as it goes for these awards shows (and I admit I still like to watch them), the films that should win often don't and vice-versa. Quality will get you nominated, but politics chooses the winner.
