especially if that ranting consists of requests to make drastic changes to the fundamental nature of D&D. The whole "low-magic" argument is a taste issue.

I also find it interesting that you can claim, in the same breath, that low-magic is a "taste" issue, but that creating a low-magic version of the game alters its "fundamental" nature. Clearly, it is either one or the other.

If it is a taste issue, then WotC would be well-served by catering to a wider variety of tastes, IMHO. If it is a fundamental issue, it is certainly fundamental only to this edition of D&D, not to D&D as a whole. It is pretty clearly to my mind that WotC has already changed the game in a pretty big way. 3.0 was a major overhaul. The game may yet have many major overhauls to come.

If anything, the ability to choose from among a host of options has always been the most fundamental aspect of the game. As pointed out previously, these options were so numerous that there is quite a bit of difficulty in determining what the average OD&D game was like. Low magic. High magic. Somewhere in between. Lots of options. In fact, so many options that the word "fundamental" seems strange to me when used to describe D&D.

Then again, I am not a fundamentalist.

D&D does not have to be high-magic. If WotC does as much market research as claimed, then we very may well be on the cusp of a lower-magic version....or a version that is not so precariously balanced that it makes many believe the option is disallowed.

If there is anything in life that is not subject to change, it is the fact that things will change. This edition is not set in stone.

Raven,

When a mod closes a thread instead of immediately opening a new thread to continue the discussion (including quotes from the original thread) you should take it as a hint to let the matter drop for a while.

Thanks.
