Lucky starting out in Temple of Elemental

I am taking a Sorcerer 4th level in the Return to Temple of Elemental Evil.

Our Dm decided he would roll to see what magic, if any each character would have starting out.

I got a +2 light crossbow & a +2 ring of Protection plus a couple of potions.

How lucky could I get?!!!! I thought wow this rocks. That was until our 1st encounter BEFORE WE EVEN GOT TO HOMMLET!!!!!!

Several of us almost died. All the members who wore armor had to take it off to go to sleep, 1/2 of us couldn't see in the dark, and the heavy rain storm made for minor inconvient spell casting.

5 ogres, only one got away. I was dropped from 20 hit points to 4 hit points , thank god I cast the Shield spell in time it gave me a 22 AC.
The rest of the party was at around 10 hit points or so and the DM never let up. We only had one days travel left to get to hommlet. Oh and Encumberance rules suck I was encumbered with just the starting gold pieces that a 4 th level character gets at 4th level. Had to spend it all in Hommlet and keep a cleric in town on retainer for us.

I can tell we are in for it.

Man, if you think you've got it bad, maybe you should go find the original Village of Hommlet module, might be more your speed.

Seriously, though, after being critted by a ballista last night during the surprise round of a combat, I don't have much sympathy for ya!

Damn fine module so far, hope you enjoy it.

My group started playing RttToEE a few weeks ago, and I have got to tell you, your encounter along the road was nothing. Just wait.

I saw a thread around here a few weeks ago about RttToEE and some people were saying their parties had lost as many as 19 PCs since they started the adventure.

So far, my group has been pretty lucky. Today, one party member was down to -9 AND getting Strength drained at the same time. Only a few minutes before that, my character had been petrified. However, none of us have died. We've got some really tough characters and some brilliant tactics. Its been real close several times but so far we've pulled through it all.

We actually finished the Temple last night, man....the last 4 game sessions have been nasty....
