Lycanthrope Experience

Ascii King

First Post
If my 4th level Monk is afflicted with Lycanthropy and adds 6 levels of werebear as well as a Level Adjustment of 2, then he would have an ECL of 12. He would need 78,000 xp to get to 13.

Does my guy have 66,000 xp automatically or does he still have the measly 9,900 he had just before being bit? The DM says I'll need to gain 68,100 more xp before I can advance a level.

I'd let you advance as normal (ignore the lycanthropy changes completely for advancement), until you got rid of it.

If you do not plan to get rid of it, I'm with your DM. You should then "pay" the appropriate price for your power.

What Thanee said. If you're not planning to get cured, you just (presumably) became a whole lot tougher than the other PCs, so you have to pay for that.

For lycanthropic advancement I like to use the level advancement on the WotC website, instead of being all powerful right away. If you decided to stick with it you advance in the same way, with enough experience you simply gain a lycanthrope level, or a class level with a minimum of one lycanthropic level (you're just not a verey good lycanthrope is all if only selecting one level).

I fully back Liquidsabre's suggestion. Check the WotC site under Savage Progressions. If you and your DM want more reading material to really evaluate that as an option, let me know and I will dig up some of the relevant threads here. I know they are around, I have posted in them before. :)

Personally, I'd say regardless of whether or not you plan on keeping the disease, the level adjustment and higher xp requirement takes effect unitl it is cured, if it is cured.
