[M&M-ish (maybe)] X-Men?

This probably goes without saying, but I'll say it, because not saying it sometimes leads to trouble and tears :)

If you go back-issue hunting, don't pay a lot for a book. If you see X-Dude #3 at your local store for $25, resist the urge to spit and go look online, preferably eBay or something like www.milehighcomics.com; I can almost bet you'll find it cheaper.

The days of comics being actually worth anything is over, save for issues (like, say, stuff from the Golden Age, or the Sixties) that are actually hard to find or have some special significance. Most of the X-Men 'hard to find' issues, (like the Death of Phoenix) are in trade paperbacks for a reasonable price, or have reprint runs.

X-men actually started in the sixties with Beast, Cyclops, Marvel Girl and Angel (can't recall if there was anyone else at the time)

Iceman of course! (I've been reading the Essentials and enjoying them in all their cornball glory)

Of course! How'd I forget him? Especially after watching Spider-man and his amazing friends every Saturday as a kid. :)

I don't know if they do in your neck of the woods, but when the libraries in my country realised that they pulled in more young readers with comics (in the form of trade paperbacks and other graphic novels), they started seriously stocking up on them. You might want to see if there are any good historical compilations in there; it's where I got all my X-history. (Well, except for the stuff from other fen, but if you can find them they're a good source of background reading material too.)

Actually, that's a good suggestion. I live in the same town as Shadowlight, and I happen to know that essential X-men 1-4 are all there. I've got number 2 checked out right now. I had the reprints of all these issues as Classic X-Men some years ago, though.
