M2: The Search for Goblin HQ

Descent into the depths

As the party prepares their descent, the captives balk. "I ain't going down there." says Thain. "Tell you what, we'll set up a watch in the tower to keep an eye out for the goblin caravan. If we see it coming, then...umm."

"Then we'll come tell you." says Philo.

"I ain't going down there either." says Bombadill.

"OK. If we see them coming, we head for the hills." says Philo.

"I'll try to fix the drawbridge while you guys are at it." says Thain. Each of the three arms himself with crossbow and various other weapons.

----------------------

Rinaldo takes the lead down the stairs. He holds a torch (or sunrod? which?) high, and moves slowly and carefully. The darkness below is dead quiet.

The stairs spiral down about 25 feet into a rectangular room, about 25 by 35 feet. Sturdy doors are visible on the East and West stone walls. North and South walls are not visible, but heavy black curtains hang about 25 feet apart to set out the room.

The floor is lightly strewn with rubble, bones, and trash.

Tenebrynn moves cautiously into the room behind the rest of the group. He keeps his eyes peeled for any movement at all and follows Charlarn's suggestion to keep watch on the doors while everyone else moves on down the room towards the curtains.

"We couldn't find the way Irene has gone... not sure looking for footstep will be usefull, I'll take a quick look, but as time is against us, I won't waste too much time. I am not an expert."

Rinaldo bend down to look around the stairs to see if there any footprint near or around.

Somac: Male Human Barbarian 1

Somac's heart rate speeds considerably. This is most likely the creepiest place he has ever been. Sure, he fought an orc or two with his tribe, and he was scared to death doing it. But he has never liked to be underground. That someone would build a place like this is simply alien to him. Somac does his best to keep his wits about him. He stays close to Rinaldo. Knowing that the merchant's skills will come in handy down here, Somac will do his best to protect him.

Dawn of the Dead...

The group cautiously enters the dark room. Rinaldo moves around and kneels, searching the ground for footprints, holding his sunrod over his head. Somac moves up behind him. The other spread out slightly, eyeing the doors. Ashnar, keeping one eye on the East door, puts his hand to the curtain. He can feel a slit, allowing him to put his hand in and pull the curtain aside.

Drawing the curtain back, his heart is suddenly seized in fear. Behind the curtain is a figure of a man, standing. But it is more of a corpse. It's flesh is grey and dripping, its eyesockets hollow, its hair white, flat and stringy. It's mouth opens and a high, loud cry emerges, as sightless sockets focus on the mage. All around, similar cries erupt, and through invisible slits in the black cloth, the walking dead lunge through the curtains, clawed fingers grasping at the adventurers' throats.

Initiative: Charlyn, Ashnar, Nurlan
undead
Rinaldo, Somac, Tor, Tenebryn

I'll assume Rinaldo carries a sunrod. This provides reasonable light for everyone at this point. Does anyone else carry a light?

Also, these undead are screaming loudly. While spell casting is unaffected, the PCs are unable to verbally communicate at this time. Nor would Nurlan be able to effectively inspire courage.

Tor, Mostly Human Barbarian 1

Always ready for an attack, Tor strikes out with lightning quickness at the aproaching undead.

ooc:

I believe that two of those Zombies (the one diagonally to my left and the one to his left) passed through my threatened squares in moving through the curtain. Due to combat reflexes, that will provoke two AOOs even though I was flat footed at the time.

Attack: +3 Damage: 2d4+3

As my initiative is after the undead, I will post my action for round one after I see what they do.

I can get 3 AOOs per round, in case any of those pesky Zombies try anything else (such as moving!)

Rinaldo will fight with his rapier, trying to get the best position possible. Even if there is chance to sneak undead, he will try to have bracket for easier ccombat, and feint when he can, just in case he can make them lose some dodge bonus... (don't think zombie have one, but Rinaldo doesn't) if he find after a time it is useless. He will be all the time on the defensive too (Expertise 1 point on AC).
