Mad Mad House

I watched it because the Apprentice is a bad replacement for NBC thursaday (others seen to dissagree). As a result I thought I might give it a shot. I'm not sure what to make of it yet. The premise of the show seems to be let the audience be amused at the uncomfortableness of conservatives. It only works because the contestants are uncomfortable with alternate lifestyles. It all depends on your point of view on how this would go over. For me I respect the views of the Witch, naturalist, primative and voodoo preistess (Although I am bothered by the voodoo name instead of Santaria), as for the vampire I would need to get to know him personally since in general I can't help but to laugh at the goth/vampire subculture in general (But I certainly don't fear it). If I was on the show I would be trying to learn as much from the hosts as possible and would be willing to try out some stuff just for fun like hanging from hooks, drinking blood, sleeping in coffins (even before the show I always wondered whether you could buy a coffin to use as bed) as well as being honored to be included in Wiccan and Santaria ceremonies. Most of my friends as well would likely be happy to participate as well. If the show turns out to be about personal growth I am all for it, if on the other hand it becomes just about making fun of conservatives then I will stop watching.

Well, as you can see, the "alts" as they call themselves are trying to get the guests to open up and grow as people. Its the individuals who cant do that, or who seem to have no intrest, that they vote off.

I too would love to participate in all this stuff, So I doubt they'd let me on the show next season.

Maybe if I made belive i was an ignorant clod and then changed faces during the show i could take the 100g's.

The prize is too small also. But then again this is sci-fi not NBC.

I will agree with you on that, but just because the hosts (I can't bring myself to use the other term) seem to have good intentions doesn't meen the producers do. This is why I will watch a little longer before deciding. If the episodes are cut to show this personal growth that is wanted by the hosts then I might enjoy it. If on the other hand the episodes are cut more in a way that makes fun of the contestants I wont. Reality shows use such a tiny percentage of the footage that you can make things appear any number of ways.

It actually makes me sad there are people out there who think there's something to be learned from that bunch of fakes and posers...

90% of the "alts" out there do what they do because they're either bored and can't find something useful to do, trying very hard to get laid, or because (my favorite) they've essentially been pressured by their peer group into "not conforming".

You want to grow as a person? A good start would be figuring out that you're not going to do it by wasting time on some idiotic reality show...

This sounds very harsh to me. First off 2 of the hosts are practitioners of legitimate religions trying to teach people about their religion. There are millions of practicing Wiccans and followers of Santaria out there and disparaging their religion of consisting of fakes and posers is just wrong. We shall see about the naturalist and the modern primative but both of them also represent, if somewhat on the extreme side, the world views of millions of more people. Tattooing and body piercing has a very long history and there are millions of more people who take part in this who live otherwise conventional lives. I don't see how being inspired by tribal cultures is any less legitimate than being inspired by any other "normal" culture (such as asian culture, eating asian food, wearing asian inspired clothes, and living in asian influenced houses decorated using Feng Shui). Just because someone likes and is inspired by a culture other than Western European doesn't make them bored slackers who can't get laid. Even the Vampire can help teach tolerance. As can be seen from your attitude you seem to have little regard for any subculture and having to spend time with someone like this will likely will end up teaching that they have feelings too and are not just someone that can be pigeonholed into a nice litle box of intolerance. Yes there are jerks, posers, and losers in the Goth subculture but they also exist in my little whitebread suburban neighborhood as they do everywhere.

In general I agree with you if that show is more like fear factor, but in those shows where people are forced to live with each other for extended periods there is a growth and greater understanding of others. I know it may sound weird (and I do treat it somewhat as a guilty pleasure) but I have found that the granddaddy of reality shows, MTV's The Real World, has shown over and over the personal growth of people who are forced to confront their stereotypes of minorities, and gays and lesbians. There is no better way to teach someone about another group that they know little about than to have to live withg them day in and day out.

I haven't seen this, and in fact have no TV, but it looks really cool. I'd love to be on it, as long as they wouldn't send you away for not participating in Santaria or Wiccan religious ceremonies.

I enjoyed the show and I especially love the hosts. So far, I am not too crazy about any of the guests. I would be hanging out with the hosts and taking notes.

I do have one problem: the captions when the guests are whispering. I am nearsighted and will be undergoing cataract surgery in a few months. I could not make out any of the words unless I was less than a foot from my large screen tv. I really wish the words would be on a solid background that would make them stand out more.

Just because the alts do not belive or follow any mainstream religion or culture, does notmake them posers or fakes. There are individuals out there that legitimently practice and belive all these things. I've met a few myself. I'm suprised that being a new yorker you could belive that.

This is not the appropriate setting to talk about Wicca and Santeria (and you can at least make a valid argument for them, so perhaps I overstate my case), but the rest of them?

We have a loser (either a poser or delusional) that gives the most self-absorbed, pretentious goths a bad name, a guy who runs around naked to get attention, and a mentally ill man who gets off on what amounts to self-mutilation.

Living in NYC, I've seen someone drop his pants, squat and take a dump in the middle of a street... How very non-mainstream and mind-opening, right? I suppose he ought to have done it over a canvass, he'd have been a performance artist... I've seen people into "body modification" on St.Mark's point to a 6" surgical scar I have and look freakin' impressed, as if they were thinking of getting one. (whereas I'm just happy to be able to walk normally again). Sorry, but living in NYC really hasn't made me appreciate people who are different just for the sake of being different. (like I said, it's just another way of conforming).
