Trash TV Secret Shame

Original Jackass years ago, but I watch so little TV that I normally don't make enough time for all the good shows I want to see.

OTOH I can put on and listen to YouTube while I commute, so THAT makes up my filler content. Movie and song reaction videos are definitely my main junk "watch"/listen.

You get a sense of parasocial enjoyment similar to introducing a friend to a favorite piece of music or cinema, but without the disappointment you can risk if your friend isn't paying attention or is insufficiently invested. YouTubers are incentivized to actually focus on and engage with the piece of media and try to say something thoughtful and/or appreciative about it. The better ones tend to be when the reactor has specialized training in the art form in question, and can provide some insight and analysis with depth. But sometimes there's just a lot of joy to be found watching someone discover and really enjoy a song you've loved for years, with fresh ears.

I’m a fan of three TV shows I would consider guilty pleasures.
  • Traitors
  • Fortune Hotel
  • Tempting Fortunes.
All three programs about people put in uncertain situations.

I don’t watch many of those, but one stood out for me:

It’s not all reaction videos, but Justin Hawkins* does do a lot of them. And as a notable performer himself, his analyses can be insightful…and humorous.

* lead singer for The Darkness

I don't think it is trash, so maybe it doesn't qualify, but The Voice is my go-to feel good show. We watched American Idol early on but the meanness inherent in putting the bad singers on always felt gross. The Voice doesn't do that.

When I am feeling really down, I head to YouTube and watch 4 chair turns for hours.

It was funny as hell to see him reacting to the video of Elizabeth Zharoff from The Charismatic Voice reacting to his song...
She's another great one - she's got such an expressive face and totally geeks out over vocal techniques... And she plays D&D, lol.

Zharoff is pretty fun. Along somewhat similar lines someone else who does excellent technical analysis is Lolli.
