Trash TV Secret Shame

That sounds about right
I went to school with Bear - he was a bit of a nutter but I’m not surprised he likes a warm bed of nights, like most people our age.

My only real trash viewing is YouTube too - I don’t mean good stuff like Matt Easton, I mostly mean watching fighting game videos.

Historically, most of my YouTube viewing has been music videos or documentaries; electric guitar gear demos; episodes of old sci-fi or comedy shows; some kind of cooking show/recipe videos. Not much else besides the occasional legal or political commentary vid.

But about 18 months ago, I started watching a LOT more videos focused on various aspects of style, fashion and (specifically) quality footwear & how it’s made. Some of it is influencer-level stuff, but most of it is people who’ve been in the business as pros in some capacity: authors, cobblers, Hollywood style consultants, etc.

The catalyst was I was in the process of culling & rebuilding my wardrobe, and wanted some guidance on minor tweaks & new options. In particular, I’d been wearing cowboy boots & hikers as virtually my only boots for 40+ years. (I had one pair of tactical boots.) But after 20 years of ownership and multiple resolings, I’d given up my last 2 pairs of cowboy boots, and had started trying out other boot styles. My initial attempts to buy “dress boots” were mixed. Sizing was off. Quality was hit or miss.

So I dove into the internet & binge watched stylists talking finer points of style and the brands that deliver quality. And cobblers showing hallmarks of quality by either doing destructive tests or demonstrating rebuilding/repair techniques. I didn’t agree with all the sartorial style advice, and you always tried to be aware of how things were being monetized, but generally speaking, it’s been an informative time. Learned a bunch about boot materials & construction, types of dress shoes and boots and their sartorial appropriateness. Result: my shoe & boot game has never been better.

Really gotta say YouTube did hugely, hugely improve for me when they put in the first round of anti-nazi-rabbithole changes in like, 2019. Previously, if you ever clicked on anything involving guns, even tangentially, or ever clicked on any kind of criticism of videogames, no matter how mild and well-mannered, your recommendations were suddenly like 20-40% weird far-right grifters with videos with titles like "SJWs ruined Mass Effect!!!"
Fascinating; I had this happen to me, with one poorly-chosen Baldur’s Gate review video leading to an avalanche of chuds. I don’t recall when it was, so I don’t know if it was before or after the algorithm change, but it took months of pruning to get things back to normal.

I don't watch random tv anymore since I cancelled my cable and unplugged from the idiot box almost two decades ago... But before that, I did like to watch shows like Pawn Stars, American Pickers, Storage Wars, and Antiques Road Show. Not necessarily trash but about the only things I'd really watch outside of a couple of favorite tv series.

These days, my "junk food" video habits usually involve watching YT music reaction videos... I have a couple of favorite reactors/analyzers who are generally more interesting and insightful than the usual drek.

We had Grylls visit my hometown where he apparently parachutes in for a mountain survival episode. Except he didnt, the Parachute was staged, my cousin was his local guide and every night the helicopter (which landed in the back paddock of our farm) picked him up off the mountain so he could go back to his hotel in town.
A sure lesson on how reality TV is anything but.

Yeah there are some really varied levels on how much is put on - it can be fascinating to read interviews with non-NDA'd contestants on some shows too. There are an awful lot of like, secret rules, on Survivor for example, many of which were added as the seasons went along. Most of them make complete sense, but it can be a bit weird as something someone did on one season may be secret illegal a few seasons later.
