If a Shield stacks with mundane Armor you have to put on, I see no reason it shouldn't stack with the kind you get by casting a spell.

Not only is there the opportunity cost of getting Mage Armor that way, but wearing magical (physical) armor can get you other benefits the spell does not.The same character could just wear studded leather with the shield and have an AC of 19 without having to waste a precious invocation slot. IMO pretty far from "overpowered"; it's actually in the long run likely a poor choice when there are invocations like Agonizing Blast, Book of Ancient Secrets, or Devil's Sight available.
