Magecraft Spell from Eberron

I'm away from my books right now. What type of bonus does the Eberron Magecraft spell grant? Is it a competance bonus?

Generally correct. I don't think it's mentioned explicitly anywhere, but that's the usual D&D assumption.

Also note that progress "by the day" is done in copper pieces, rather than silver pieces. If you cast the spell every day for a week, you get +5 to your check representing one week's worth of progress.

Hm.

If that's what you want, then what you really want is a set of "Master Artisan's tools."

Masterwork Artisan's Tools = 55gp (+2 circumstance bonus to a single Craft skill)

and

+5 Competence Bonus to a skill = 5*5*100gp = 2,500gp

Grand total = 2,555gp for +7 to a skill

The reason a tool that casts Magecraft won't work is that competence bonuses to skills are already present on the table, thus using the table is the appropriate way to price them.

A tool that casts Magecraft is different from the normally enhanced tools in two important ways:

1: Magecraft applies to any skill check, and in this way is more powerful than a bonus to a particular skill.

2: Magecraft's bonus applies only to a skill check meant to represent a single day's worth of work. It would not apply to any other use of the skill (like, say, repairing a warforged). It is in this way less powerful than a bonus to a particular skill.

Magecraft, IMHO, is not a good spell to be made into a "Once-daily" item.
