I was looking through my Dragon Magazine archive cd's and I found some articles that I really liked and was wondering how to convert them to 3rdEd. The functions would be pretty much the same, and I think I can figure out the prereq's, but I wouldn't know how to price them.
One of the articles had what I think is a ingenious item. It was in Dragon Magazine #111 page 8, and it was called a magic focusing item. Looks like it was made for 1stEd but that shouldn't be a problem.
Here's how it works. It would be a wonderous item normally shaped like a wand, ring, or amulet. Each item has 1 spell that is "built into" it. If you wanted to use the spell in the item, you had to use up one of your daily spell slots. You could use it to cast the spell whether or not you had memorized it that day or even knew the spell at all. For example, if you had a magic focus wand of fireballs then you can use it to cast fireball at any time, but to do so you would give up a third level or higher spell slot.
Restrictions are that the spell must be on your spell list, the spell slot you use must be the same type (arcane/divine) as the spell in the item unless it’s on both the cleric and sor/wiz lists.
You would generally use only 1 action or maybe 1 round spells. Also, either limit it to low-cost or no cost masterial components or or require the component be supplied each time the item was used. You could do the same for the focus or build it into the item itself. Wand-like items are mostly offensive spells, and ring-like and amulet-like items would be protective and miscellaneous spells.
I’m not exactly sure how to price these though. I was thinking it could be priced as a spell trigger or spell completion item useable once or twice a day. You can use it more than that but it is dependant on your available spell slots, so I think that should balance it out.
There are also some that can cast a number of related spells, like fire spells, charm, etc. Other versions have extra benefits that make things a little tricky. There are some that they describe as “analagous” to a +1 to +5 sword. They add +1 to +5 to the caster level of the spell that is cast from the item. Some less poewrful ones affect only part of the spell like range, and duration, which would basically be a metamagiced version.
What are your opinions of the item? How should I handle the conversion in price to 3rdEd? Thanks for any help.
