Magic Item Help

I have a question about magic items. If you buy a magic weapon with a few special properties and what not, can you later add more properties to the item at the cost of the ability. For example, Bob the fighter buys a +1 flaming long sword. Later Bob decides he would like to make his sword a +1 flaming throwing lnogsword. Can he pay just for the throwing ability or does he have to get a new magic sword? Also what are the neccesary plusses to obtain items,(i.e. do you need a +5 bonus to get the vorpal ability or can you have a +1 vorpal dagger?)

Yes. You pay the difference between the two for the "upgrade". For example, if Bob has a +1 flaming longsword (8,315gp), and he wants to upgrade it to a +2 flaming longsword (18,315gp), he must pay the difference between the two, which would be 10,000gp.

The only restriction is that the weapon must have an enhancement bonus of at least +1. It doesn't have to be higher, no matter the enhancement you want to put on, whether it be flaming burst or vorpal.
