Magic Items and Changing Shape

Scenario: A 13th lvl wizard is wearing an Amulet of Health +4, he has cast statue on himself 1 hour ago and currently has 10 hp left. If he changes to his stone statue form, does the Amulet of Health cease to function (thereby bringing him to -16 hp and killing him)?

What if the same wizard casts polymorph and changed into something without a 'neck' to accomodate the amulet? Would the wizard fall unconscious because the amulet ceases to function?

The classical excuse tends to be that items of all sorts simply meld into the wizard's new form and continue to operate as such, but I think I like your idea better.
