Magic items that grant the use of feats

Anyone have the equation for the cost of giving a magic item a feat? I heard there was an equation...searched all of my books..no where to be found.

Any help would me MUCh appreciated. :(

I believe it was a sidebar in the Arms and Equipment Guide.

Memory serving it was 10k for a feat, with an additional 10k per prerequisite feat.

So, ignoring slot affinity for this example, a bracelet that granted the wearer access to the Power Attack feat would cost 10k, whereas a headband that granted access to the Whirlwind Attack feat would cost 50k. 10k for the feat, and an additional 40k for the Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, and Combat Expertise requirements. Important to note that the wearer would not have access to the prereq feats unless they were included seperatly (which would end up costing a pretty penny).

If a feat grants a particular bonus similar to those listed on the DMG chart, use those guidelines instead. A Ring of Skill Focus, say, should be priced as an item that grants a +3 bonus to a skill, rather than an item that grants a feat.
 




My question is can you use a feat granted by a magic item as a prerequisite feat?

If my headband gives me Combat Reflexes then can I take Improved Trip?

Absolutely not. Because you need Combat Expertise for Improved Trip :p

It's a gray area, I'd say you can, but beware: If you lose the item, you lose a lot of your feats
 

Yup, I'd agree with Kae'Yoss on the magic item as pre-req thing.


Yeah, go for it. You just better hope you never lose the item, and heaven help you if you use an item that grants a feat to qualify for a PrC.
 

I'd go the opposite way and say you couldn't, just because I as a DM would not want to be put in the situation where stealing a single item from a player means I take other feats or levels away from that player. It's too easy to say the DM is being cruel if such an event happens, and too easy to say a single character is being favored if teh DM steals items from other people, but not that specific item. Best to stay as far away from the situation as possible.

On the other hand, I also wouldn't allow items that grants feats at all, as pricing is practically impossible (a flat rate for all feats is just silly. By design, some feats are much more valuable than others, even without other feats as prereqs), and I think it's just plain munchkin to do so.

I agree. It's one thing to destroy the item that grants the fighter Power Attack, quite another to destroy the item that allows the wizard to be an archmage. Either you never touch the item, which means the theoretical downside to feats-in-items is meaningless, or you destroy the item and the player cries that you've ruined his entire character.

I have in the past used items that granted 1st-tier feats. And I have also used items that granted higher tier feats, only so long as the wearer had the bottom tier feats (i.e. an item that would grant Spring Attack if the PC had Dodge and Mobility already). These items never count toward PrC prerequisites.

I also did not use a formula to calculate their cost. All feats are not created equal. At 10,000gp, some feats will be a steal, while others will be grossly overpriced.
