Magic Proof Undead Gatekeeper?

Sigurd

First Post
I have an idea for a cursed undead guarding a location. Sort of like the Pirates of the Caribbean sailors the creature must serve to open the way for creatures so long as "X" is true. I'm still considering what X might be.

Anyway, my problem is that there are so many game strategies to destroy\disable\defeat undead. I'm worried the plot device is too fragile for a campaign world.

Any suggestions on modifying the situation to make it more believable?

Make it a sentient golem. I.e. "We shoved your soul into this here golem."

Golems are immune to most magic.

If you still want the "Undead" feel, make it a bone golem.

If the players really want to destroy the only creature that can open the way, I'd just let them.

It'll probably reform after some period of time.

Can always make it a ghost. It reforms every day until condition Y is fulfilled.

But the key is to not make it a guardian, but a door. You literally can't get to wherever unless it lets you.

Just give it a 'reformation' power as long as X is true, the critter can reform.

One option for X is that tehre is a 'trap'.. the trap's major ability is that it serves the 'leader' roll for undead in the area. Heals them, brings them back whatever.. so they need to disable the trap before they can do anything meaningful to the guardian.
