Hey guys! I had one of them thar apostrophes...

What if there were "time restrictions" placed on all magic.

Meaning you have to wait 1 round per spell level before you can again cast a spell of the same level... So, a wizard capable of 9th level spells, could start combat with a 9th level spell, but would then have to wait until the 10th round before he can cast another 9th level spell.

Now, magic items would be a little different. Say flaming would be double the + bonus. So, you could only use the flaming ability of a sword every other round. A Flaming Burst sword would only function every 4th round.

Potions and scrolls would be based on the level of the spell they contain.

Monters would fall under the same restrictions based on the spell level of their abilities.

Certain abilities would have to be "judgement called".

What do you think?

How long does the typical battle last for high level characters? If it is only 3 rounds then they could cast a 9th, 8th and seventh level spell and not be affected that much. It would be interesting to see how it would play out in a battle that lasted several rounds. We will have to get toghether some time and play test all of these ideas.

Just to through something else out there, what if you limited wizards to being able to memorize only 1 of a spell per day. For example, instead of being able to memorize 3 fireballs the wizard can only memorize 1 and must use the other two slots for something else. You could let sorcerers still do their thing, but to balance it out you would reduce the number of spells they would have per day. I don't know, just an idea.
