Magic the Gatering Q. - Trample

My brother attacked me with a 3/1 trample. I blocked it with a 1/1. Killing his monster i said that i didn't take his damage from the trample but he said i do. The rules say "If a creature with trample would assign enough damage to its blockers to destroy them, you may have it assign the rest of its damage to the defending play or planeswalker" does this mean even if i killed his monster with the blocking monster i still take the damage??

Yes. The thing is that the damage dealing is simultaneous.

A vanilla 3/1 elf is blocked by a 1/1 goblin. You assign 3 damage to the goblin, your opponent assigns 1 damage to the elf. All damage is dealt simultaneously and the two creatures die.

A 3/1 elephant with trample is blocked by a 1/1 goblin. You assign 1 damage to the goblin and 2 damage to your opponent. Your opponent assigns one damage to the elephant. All damage is dealt simultaneously, the two creatures die. and your opponent takes 2 damage.
