Magic Weapon costs

Okay I don't have my books available ATM so excuse me if some facts are incorrect.

A PC inherits a +1 weapon from his family, now as time goes on this weapon will become obsolete as levels go by. However the PC does not want to dispose of the weapon so he decides to have enchantments added to it as he progreses and funds allow.
Now the question is how much does this cost?
First mod to be add an additional +1 enchantment and shock, = +2 enchantment. Book price 4000gp for +2 or is it the additional price for +3? after all it will now be a +3 weapon.
Later he adds the holy ability (+2) does this cost 4000 or more?

Thx in advance

It would cost the normal amount for buying a new weapon minus the cost of the weapon before the new abilites.

So to make it +2 it would cost 6000gp.

Then to add shock 10000gp.

Then adding holy 32000gp.

As what Orco42 said but this may be clearer.

The +1 weapon has already been enchanted and the family has paid 2000gp.

A +2 weapon is 8000gp but you already have a +1 so 8000gp - 2000gp = 6000gp cost to upgrade from +1 to +2.
So you now have a +2 weapon and you want to add shock enchantment which makes it +3.
+2 = 8000gp
+3 = 18000gp

COST 18000-8000=10000gp.

So from +1 to +2 and shock is 2000gp - 18000gp = 16000gp
