I noticed this as a weapon material and I know you need EWP to use it and that it ups the damage by a size category, but does it have any other properties I should be aware of? Also what would be its cost by weight say per kilogram.
That, plus platinum and other exotic materials for magic weapons & items can be found in Magic of Faerun. Since I've only used it to boost weapon damage, I can't recall any other properties they might have. I'll be able to look it up later, though.
Gold: acid & fire resistance 2 wearer of armor; armor is 1 class heavier; +10% ASF; weapons are Heavy (shift dice up 1 weapon size class, effectively); hardness 10; 30HP/1" thickness
Platinum: as above, but cold & sonic resistance 2.
I assume there's somethig more than just a metal at work here otherwise why on earth would wearing say chainmail made out of platinum give you resistance to cold?

That's explained on a book made by ol' senile Elminster where he tells the good people of the realms about the magical properties of metals and their enchanting. Removing the yadda yadda, that's how the metal reacts to the infusion of raw magical power used to create them, since no normal forge can create really resistant weapons/armors made of Gold or Platinum.
Also, it's frikking costy. 500 gp for each 10lb of material, besides enchanting, service, masterwork cost, etc. For Platinum it reaches 5000 gp for each 10lb used. That's so not going to happen.
