Magical Threshold for PCs: Some Crunch, Some Fluff

Or you could make all masterwork weapons "memory" weapons. If you don't like the idea of magic sprining out of the air, perhaps as the warrior and his weapon grow in fame, the fear and awe of the populace creates a sort of subconscious ritual that draws magic from the world and imprints it onto the weapon. The more fame and skill the warrior acquires, the more powerful his weapon becomes.

More to the point, at least in my opinion, is that this should not be an automatic feature. This is something that CAN happen, not something that WILL happen. I.e. - if the players are sufficiently heroic, maybe their weapon will take on some of their properties. Or maybe it will always remain just a hunk of metal.

Magic of this nature is not so predictable as some of the posts make it sound (imho).

This would eliminate the problem of 'powering up' their items and then handing them off to their henchmen as well.

Yeah it's a coold idea, but my problem here is that the sword of the great swordsmaster is actually useless to the great swordsmaster.....it's only useful if he gives it to somebody else.

In fact the best thing for a swordmaster to do is to use a weapon until it takes on his memories and then give it to somebody else. He can then start over again with a brand new +1 weapon. Thus the swordmaster becomes sort of a magic item factory.

FadedC, our missing the main benefits of this system... yes, the swordmaster won't be an better at hitting thier opponents due to the inherent awesome bonus they have. However they will have a sword that holds up better to blows and has special effects such as Bane, Flaming, Radiant, etc...

This is such a good idea I think I will incorperate it into my current 3x game :)

What would be nice to add to this is a list of probable effects based on the characters level and 'type' {alignment, class, activities, etc..}

For instance, IMC there is a bard named Galen who has a penchant to roll very good when laying about with a warhammer. It would be appropriate for the hammer to manifest a Thundering ability. :)
