Making a cleric, advise?

Clerics are only boring in battle until they blow something up with energy vortex. Especially if they have spell resistance. =D I swear, that spell saved our characters' lives last night. (1d8+10)x2 damage in a 20ft burst was enough to kill a stone giant that I'd been wailing on for several rounds (not to mention who killed my summoned Hound Archon) along with every orc in the area. Seriously, a cleric can turn the tide of battle with a spell like that.

Defense of the party through better tactics (or explosives if that fails), or at least that's what my cleric believes.

I am currently playing a 6th level cleric of Tempus (domains: war, strength) in a Forgotten Realms PBP game, and he had made a difference in almost every encounter (with either non-curative spells or in melee combat). His ability to heal only adds to his versatility.

Also, he is just plain fun to role-play.
