Making a Mesoamerican type setting...

Heya all! I'm interested in making a mesoamerican style setting. Two cultures I have thought up are a maya like culture that is fairly stable but is a series of cities states and a more agressive, more brutal and far younger mexica (aztec) Culture coming in from the north. Does any one have any suggestions on where to start? I am a bit familiar with mesoamerican mythology and culture in general so that is not a problem. It is more an implimentation issue. For instance, I doubt that people who never learned to smith metal would have any sort of heavy or possibly even medium armor. Also as the area will be mostly warm jungle I can't imagine people teomping around in plate mail. Any suggestions?

I always wanted to play in a campaign like this. Id definately go with light armor only, except for *special* armors, like gold plated stuff for the village leaders. Probably no two handed weapons due to tight jungle spaces. I think the players would have to rely on cover and stealth to survive in a hostile environment; low AC's and first level characters are a deadly combo. I suppose priests could be implemented (like the sacrificial altar/ritual guys), as well as a more arcane (witch doctor?) class.

And thats all i can think of for now :D

See if you can find a copy of GURPS Aztec. It will be expensive, but it is a great gaming resource. I used it for my Ars Magica game when my group decided to cross the great western ocean.

See if you can find a book called Aztec Warfare in the library or buy a copy. Nice source of fighting practices of that group. From memory:

Armor (for those who had it) consisted of a padded cotton vest. More complex suits incorporated cotton forearms and leggings. This was often covered with a 'feather suit' which made grappling them harder. While VERY rare, this armor was occasionally augmented with copper or gold plates/bands.

Shields were made of wicker and stretched leather. These small shields had a feather fringe along the bottom that was used to sweep asside missile weapons. Again, while rare, this was also sometimes augmented with beaten copper or gold plates. An older shield style was made of a wicker mat that could be rolled and unrolled for portability, and was more the size of a large or tower shield.

Weapons were made mostly of wood and obsidian/flint. Most of the weapons in the PHB had equivalents or could be extrapolated easilly enough. Common weapons would be short bows, slings, atlatls, macahuitls (Long swords and two handed swords), maces, and tepoztopilli (Glaive or halberd). Obsidian actually holds a better edge then steel, is self sharpening, and weapons were often designed to have 'serrated' edges. They could cause devestating damage vs. unarmored opponents, but had a tendency to break against metal. I would suggest liberal use of Glassteel if you dont want to worry about weapon replacement as much.

An important aspect is remembering that the sacrifice of prisoners of war was the great priority of warfare. You'll have to include some good subdual or unconcious rules regaring clubs and maces made of primitive material. Killing oponents is wasting sacrifices.

Up to a certain point war was ritualized. "Padded" armor and helmets are the norm with very little bronze I imagine. Arrows will be similarly innefective.

There also were a couple of products for Mystara/Hollow World which would work too:

GAZ14 The Attruaghin Clans
HWR1 Sons of Azca

The Attruaghin Clans product touched on five different Native American cultures. Sons of Azca provided a setting centered on a culture based off of the Aztecs.

As to weapons

If the game is going to be a closed meso-american only type game (ie no outsiders coming in with metal weapons) I'd suggest that you just use the straight weapon and armour list (less crossbows and heavy armour) as presented in 'normal' DnD and just tell players that although the stats are being used the flavour will change - weapons are made of wood and obsidian, occasionally bone (distribute pictures) armour is padded and ar best equate to studded leather. Better armour might be available but is rare and near magical (perhaps allow PCs to acquire dire-alligator hide or giant turtle shell armour)

I might suggest a Attack Roll = 1 causes weapon breakage (Hardness reduced by Dam roll)
