Making Friends With Beholders, and Other Strangeness!

one of our party members once tried this approach. the PC tried to make friends with a sphinx on a solo adventure, and was somehow conned into taking off all her equipment in a truce. the DM preceeded to almost kill the Pc who had to run away and bring back reinforcements...

shows what the DM thought of making friends with monsters... :D

My ranger first met Ekrok the goblin while being held prisoner by orcs. Ekrok was responsible for guarding Dover's cage, but was constantly beaten and abused by his orcish overlords. He was obviously as much of a prisoner as Dover was, inspiring the freedom-lovin' Dover to grab Ekrok, throw the stunned goblin over his shoulder, and run like hell when the chance for escape presented itself. Since that day, Ekrok trained in the way of the ranger as my character's trusty sidekick - at least, he did until he was slain by a drow assassin as a warning*. One day, I shall avenge my tiny, foul-smelling buddy...

* - Despite the references to rangers, drow, and assassins in this anecdote, I would just like to mention that my ranger is a non-dual-wielding human, not a drow. Just for the record.
